GOP Facing Losses in Congress Elections
Submitted by Fletch on Thu, 2008-03-20 20:03.WASHINGTON - The news just keeps getting worse for Republicans in this year's campaigns for Congress.
When New York Rep. Tom Reynolds announced he was retiring Thursday, that made it 26 current GOP lawmakers who are calling it quits, opening up chances for Democrats this November. Only seven seats are being given up by the Democrats, who see bright opportunities to fatten their majority in the House -- and the Senate as well.

What's more difficult, finding a subatomic particle or winning a seat as a Democrat in the 14th Congressional District?
Former Fermilab scientist Bill Foster of Geneva couldn't quite answer the question Sunday when he thanked voters for making him the first Democrat in decades to hold that position.
It's "a completely different set of brain cells," said Foster, who once participated in Fermilab's discovery of the so-called "top quark."

A Democrat is taking over the 14th Congressional District seat long held by Republican Dennis Hastert.
In a rare special election Saturday, Democrat Bill Foster of Geneva was elected to fill the remaining 10 months of Hastert's seat.
Foster defeated Jim Oberweis of Sugar Grove, 52,010 to 46,988, according to unofficial totals.

Operation: Turn DuPage Blue can no longer be considered an offshoot of the county's Democratic Party.
They're running things now.
The splinter group's chairman, Bob Peickert, handily defeated incumbent DuPage County Democratic Party Chairman Rob Bisceglie at Wednesday night's convention in Wheaton.
In all, 215 of the nearly 250 Democratic precinct committeemen showed up to vote for new party leadership.

Hastert leaving early, Roll Call reports

The Roll Call newspaper in Washington reported on its website last night that former House Speaker Dennis Hastert of Illinois intends to resign his House seat later this year.
The subscription-only site said Hastert, who had already announced he would not seek reelection in 2008, was calling friends and associates and telling them of his decision. His early departure would create the need for a special election in his exurban Chicago district, possibly on Illinois' Feb. 5 presidential primary day.
